Following the release of “Simple Functions” earlier this year, Squidge are back with their new single "Cardboard Box". Despite it’s bouncy, energetic characteristics, Cardboard Box acts as a metaphorical vessel that reflects upon a person's memories and life experiences from their deathbed. Recollections of naive childhood games, discovering alcohol and sex and the struggles of supporting yourself financially. This “box” awaits a day where it is full, so that it’s owner can unpackage it’s contents to make peace with themselves in preparation for the end. This is exemplified by the final line of the song, ‘Watch the world crumbling, at least I’m not suffering anymore’ leaving the listener with a fulfilling, yet somber conclusion.
lyrics
When it's all over could you take a picture of the two of us?
And steal a cardboard box and crayons,
and turn it into anything,
Cus I don’t care, where we’ll end up,
As long as you turn to dust with,
Memories of today
To feel happy and alright,
I’ll look back when I’m,
Lying in my bed,
Dying in my head,
Feel happy and alright,
I’ll look back when I’m,
Lying in my bed,
Dying in my head,
Now we’re getting taller,
Let's recycle, the things that we used to love,
And fill the void with succubi,
That we could never hope to meet,
Cus your feelings are dumb,
So don’t stay young my friend,
Replace me with the liquid,
To feel happy and alright,
I’ll look back when I’m,
Lying in my bed,
Dying in my head,
Feel happy and alright,
As I think of you
Where you gunna sleep?
Where gunna eat?
How you gunna pay?
I don’t think I really care
Where you gunna sleep?
Where gunna eat?
How you gunna pay?
I don’t think I wanna know
I don’t think I wanna know right now
When it’s all over could you, show me the picture that you took of us?
Wish I could be the cardboard box,
You can turn me into what you want,
I’m a message,
In a bottle,
From a stranger,
That I once knew,
So what,
Please can you,
Remember to forget me?
To feel happy and alright,
I’ll look back when I’m,
Lying in my bed,
Dying in my head,
Feel happy and alright,
As I forget,
And the feelings melt away
Cus I don’t think I really care,
I’m just going to sit and stare,
Watch the world crumbling,
At least I’m not suffering anymore.
